Three Months of Service with the AmeriCorps VISTA Team
Mercy Corps Northwest’s newest VISTA team has been with us for almost three months. Since August, our VISTAs have assisted their host agencies and MCNW in developing new solutions to cyclical poverty. Members have helped create programs that assist low income people find employment, housing, and education that will enable them to work their way out of poverty.
The VISTA team has been successful in generating the resources needed to launch or expand innovative programs that range from small business incubators to health education initiatives. At the Warm Springs Community Action Team, a MCNW VISTA helped conduct a massive needs assessment of local business owners and potential entrepreneurs that will allow the agency to design programming to better fit the community’s needs. In Hillsboro, at Bienestar Inc., the MCNW VISTA took point on writing and submitting a grant that would help the agency offer much-needed GED and ESL classes to its low income Latino residents. Across all of the programs that AmeriCorps VISTAs support we’ve seen an increase in volunteers, in grants submitted, and in new materials created, providing a major benefit to the low income communities that VISTAs support.
