Mercy Corps Northwest Welcomes New Class of AmeriCorps VISTAs
Earlier this month, Mercy Corps NW welcomed its fifth class of AmeriCorps VISTAs into service. Our VISTAs serve at nonprofits throughout the state where they develop programs that address the systemic causes of poverty by creating economic opportunities and healthy futures for low income communities. Members have moved to Oregon from as far away as Michigan and Massachusetts to be part of VISTA and come from a wide variety of personal and professional backgrounds.
For the next twelve months MCNW VISTAs will serve out of a number of Oregonian communities including Redmond, Portland, Warm Springs, Salem, and Hillsboro at partner agencies including Marion-Polk Food Share, Bienestar Inc., Incite Inc., Warm Springs Community Action Team, NeighborImpact, Hacienda CDC, and Mercy Corps NW’s Community Investment Trust and Reentry Transition Center.
The VISTA team will assist in a wide variety of economic opportunity initiatives including expanding workforce development programs, launching small business development services for low income entrepreneurs, improving job skills training programs, and supporting programs that help low income persons buy their first home. Members will also work towards increasing food security in low income communities by improving a Meals on Wheels program.
In previous years, members have helped raise thousands of dollars and recruit hundreds of volunteers for their host organizations and improved opportunities for low income communities to develop assets and skills that help them move out of poverty. We’re confident that our new class of members will have the same outcomes and look forward to seeing the vital work that they do this year.
