VISTA Team Serves on MLK Day
On Monday, January 18 MCNW’s AmeriCorps VISTA team joined of thousands of people nationwide in celebrating the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by volunteering in their communities as part of a national day of service.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service event provided our VISTA team with the opportunity to serve their community directly, a change from their day-to-day work that focuses on building programs for low-income communities.
Our VISTAs served at the ReBuilding Center, a nonprofit focused on creative reuse. The ReBuilding Center has provided support for programs that range from vocational training opportunities to community-based building projects. The VISTA team went to their warehouse in Portland’s Mississippi district and helped sort everything from brass doorknobs to PVC piping, and then assisted in reorganizing shelf space to make materials more accessible. After a long, dusty day, the VISTA team had moved and sorted boxes and boxes of goods and donated a total of 36 hours to the ReBuilding Center and community.
