AmeriCorps VISTA

Who We Are

The Mercy Corps Northwest VISTA Team (MCNW VT) is a group of AmeriCorps VISTAs coordinated by Mercy Corps Northwest. We work throughout the Pacific Northwest to end poverty through capacity building and innovation. Our team is part of a nationwide program sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency, that engages over 5,000 people in service with AmeriCorps VISTA every year. Our members have been retired persons, mid-life career changers, recent college graduates, and everything in between.

You can read more about our current and former members here.

What We Do

We tackle poverty by building the capacity of nonprofit organizations throughout the Pacific Northwest, from Seattle to Bend. Mercy Corps NW AmeriCorps VISTAs expand economic & affordable housing opportunities and increase food security in low income communities. In the past, our VISTAs have developed volunteer programs, created training opportunities for low income entrepreneurs, designed financial wellness curricula, and much more.

You can find out more about our current VISTA sites here.

How to Join

We’re looking for committed people who want to devote a year of their lives to service. You’ll make poverty-level wages, receive a basic health benefit package, and serve full time. At the end of the year you’ll receive either an education award of $6,095 or a cash stipend of $1,800—your choice. And, most importantly, you’ll have the opportunity to dedicate yourself exclusively to serving the community. You can find out more by reading our FAQ page or by clicking the Open Positions link below.

If that appeals to you, we’d love to see an application from you during our recruitment periods: winter and early summer.

Our recruitment period is currently closed.  Please check back again in May 2020 when we will start our next VISTA recruitment cycle on the Open Positions page.

If you have questions about joining AmeriCorps VISTA after completing a review of our FAQ and Open Positions pages, you can contact our AmeriCorps VISTA Program Supervisor, Olivia Rasmussen at

Can your organization use an AmeriCorps VISTA member?

AmeriCorps VISTAs can help nonprofits and public agencies grow new programs or expand old ones. Maybe you have an idea for a novel way to offer financial education in your community. Maybe you want to completely redesign how you recruit volunteers. These are exactly the kinds of initiatives that VISTAs support. The Mercy Corps Northwest VISTA Program partners with local nonprofit and government agencies to develop, recruit for, and implement projects that build the capacity of these organizations to better serve the community and alleviate poverty. Our VISTA Program opens up a Request For Proposals process twice per year, encouraging local nonprofit and government agencies to apply to host a VISTA through our program.

Our Request For Proposals (RFP) is now open for organizations that are interested in hosting an AmeriCorps VISTA member for the service year of August 2020- August 2021.

Deadline for applications is April 3, 2020. Organizations are encouraged to apply early, as we accept sites and recruit VISTA members on a rolling basis. For RFP and application materials, contact VISTA Program Supervisor, Olivia Rasmussen at
