Who We Are
The Mercy Corps Northwest VISTA Team is a group of AmeriCorps members coordinated by Mercy Corps Northwest. We work throughout the Pacific Northwest to alleviate poverty through capacity building and innovation. Our team is part of a nationwide program sponsored by AmeriCorps, a federal agency, that engages over 5,000 people in service with their AmeriCorps VISTA every year. Our members have been retired persons, mid-life career changers, recent graduates, and everything in between.
What We Do
We tackle poverty by building the capacity of nonprofit organizations throughout the Pacific Northwest, from Seattle to Bend. Mercy Corps Northwest AmeriCorps members expand economic & affordable housing opportunities and increase workforce development in economically disadvantaged communities. In the past, our VISTAs have developed volunteer programs, created training opportunities for economically disadvantaged entrepreneurs, designed financial wellness curricula, and much more.

How to Join
We’re looking for committed community members who want to devote a year of their lives to service. You’ll receive a living allowance, a basic health allowance package, training and professional development support, and serve full time. At the end of the year you’ll receive either an education award of $6,345 or a cash stipend of $1,800—your choice. Most importantly, you’ll have the opportunity to fight for economic justice and dedicate yourself exclusively to serving the community! If that appeals to you, we’d love to see an application from you during our recruitment periods: winter and early summer. You can find out more by reading our FAQ page or by clicking the Open Positions link below.
Our recruitment period is now open as of May 2021 for an August 2021 cohort start date. Learn more by visiting the Open Positions page.
Could your organization benefit from an AmeriCorps VISTA project?
AmeriCorps members can support nonprofits and public agencies in growing new programs or expanding old ones. Maybe you have an idea for a novel way to offer financial education in your community. Maybe you want to completely redesign how you recruit volunteers. These are exactly the kinds of initiatives that VISTAs support. The Mercy Corps Northwest VISTA Program partners with nonprofit and government agencies across Oregon to develop, recruit for, and implement projects that build the capacity of these organizations to better serve the community and alleviate poverty. Our VISTA Program opens up a Request For Proposals process twice per year, encouraging local nonprofit and government agencies to apply to host a VISTA through our program.
Our Request For Proposals (RFP) is now closed for organizations that are interested in hosting an AmeriCorps VISTA member for the August 2021-2022 service year.
Deadline for applications is April 1, 2021. Organizations are recommended to contact VISTA Program Manager, Olivia Rasmussen prior to submitting a full application to discuss the potential project.

For more information on how to host a VISTA member, please thoroughly review the basic terms and conditions of service in order to determine whether or not your project might be a good fit for our program.
